1. The Four Seasons
Four violin concertos make up The Four Seasons. They were composed between 1720 and 1723 by Vivaldi. In 1725, the first concertos were published. They are widely considered to be among the best violin concertos ever written. A contemporary composer, Max Richter, defined their movements as “short, but on a micro-level, it’s modular music, made up of these small atoms.” They can be readily dismantled, much like a Lego set.”
The Four Seasons was inspired by paintings of the four seasons by Marco Ricci. Vivaldi published them with poems that described the natural aspects of the seasons he meant to evoke with his music.
This collection of violin concertos is well-known and frequently used in popular culture. It has appeared in TV shows such as “The Simpsons” and ” Halloween II horror film.” It appears in various other TV series and films of various genres.
2. “La Tempesta di mare” (The Storm at Sea or The Sea Storm) is the fifth concerto in E flat major (RV 253)
This concerto is one of Vivaldi’s shorter ones. It is high energy and filled with fresh, colorful passages. Its first movement is set with a fast tempo, and the second movement provides a break with its slow tempo. The piece ramps up again in a fast third movement, providing an exuberant ending. This one will be a workout.
Vivaldi gave three other concertos with the same subtitle, “La Tempesta di mare.” Thankfully, Danish musicologist Peter Ryom created a catalog of Vivaldi’s works in the early 20th century. This catalog uses the RV number system, making it easy to distinguish each work. Each of the Four Seasons concertos also has an RV number, but you don’t need them.
3. The “Anna Maria” Concertos
Six concertos are regarded as the best of the bunch. Shlomo Mintz performs one of them, concerto E flat major (RV 260), which can be heard here. The Israel Chamber Orchestra recorded all six of them.
Anna Maria was a very special muse to Vivaldi. He composed these concertos specifically for her because she was an excellent violinist in her time. She even has an entry in a musical dictionary from the 1700s! Vivaldi was the musical director at an orphanage for girls in Venice, Italy, and Anna Maria was one of the orphans.
4. E minor Concerto No. 2 (RV 279)
The “La stravaganza” suite contains this concerto and several others. This set stands out from Vivaldi’s other compositions because of its uniqueness. Each concerto in the set features lengthy sections of a slower tempo. This concerto moves slightly slower, from fast to slow and back to rapid. It’s still a good idea to show your speed in this piece. The concertos in “La stravaganza” were composed between 1712 and 1713 and were published in 1716.
These concertos are likewise extremely complicated. They frequently include parts for extra soloists as well as the lead violin.
5. A Minor Violin Concerto (RV 356)
Music director at the orphanage, Vivaldi, composed compositions to help young children improve their abilities. This concerto is one such example. The concerto was published as part of Vivaldi’s 12-concerto opus, L’estro Armonico (Harmonic Inspiration). This collection of concertos was published in 1711 and is a great example of Vivaldi’s work in this genre.

The Four Seasons is an excellent work by Antonio Vivaldi published in 1723. It is a part of a larger work called Il Cimento dell’armonia e dell’inventione.
